Why use a baby sleeping bag?

What temperature should the nursery be at night?

The ideal temperature for a baby's room at night should be between 16^o C and 20^o C.

To check if baby is too hot or cold, feel their tummy or neck - hands and feet are not indicative as they feel cooler.

 

Why merino and muslin?

We have chosen merino and muslin sleeping bags as they are both natural fibres and help prevent baby overheating whilst keeping baby warm.

Merino

Merino breathes, so using merino on the inside of your Go Go Bag^TM, ensures moisture  is absorbed and released away from your sleeping baby - your baby is less likely to suffer overheating.  In cooler conditions, merino will insulate.  This unique feature creates its own microclimate around the body, regulating your baby's temperature. In essence your child becomes perfectly adapted to their sleeping environment. 

Muslin

Simply dress your baby in more or fewer layers of natural-fabric sleepwear in cooler or warmer seasons. Try to avoid synthetic sleepwear fabrics such as polyester because they do not release heat and moisture. Babies are not as adaptable as adults to temperature change. A baby's body surface is about three times greater than an adult's, compared to the weight of his/her body. Babies can lose heat rapidly, as much as four times more quickly than adults. Babies under 12 months have difficulty regulating their own temperature, even in a warm environment.

When babies are cold-stressed, they use energy and oxygen to generate warmth. By keeping babies at optimal temperatures, neither too hot or cold, they can conserve energy and build up reserves. When temperature is regulated and maintained a baby will become more relaxed, gain weight and sleep longer.  This is especially important when babies are sick, premature or low birth weight babies.
 

 

Studies of infants at home also found babies sleeping on merino settled more quickly, cried less and fed for longer periods.

Research has shown that bed cover choice can also influence the prevalence of childhood respiratory allergies. Dust mites prefer hot humid environments and it has been shown that merino is much better at lowering both temperature and humidity than synthetic fibres.
